Leading Fashion Designers

Chanel, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Valentino, Halston, Karl Lagerfeld, Dior, YSL and Armani are names with which we are all familiar.

Some of the designers have passed away, but the houses they created remain strong to this day.

Up and coming artists often take over when the founding designer’s health begins to fail. For example John Galliano became the lead designer after the passing of of Christian Dior.

Like most artists, fashion designers can be temperamental. Their lives are often plastered across the tabloids. We have to respect what the designers contributed to haute couture regardless of their personal lives. But their exploits do make for interesting reading.

Up and Coming Designers

While their names might not be household words yet, these up and coming designers are talented artists with much to offer. Some of them will likely join the list of top designers of all time in years to come.

Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters are based in Chicago. Their creations are considered cutting edge and have an urban appeal. One of the highlights of their spring 2011 show was a blazer in geometric print material combined with softly colored taffeta pants.

Michael Van Der Ham works out of London. He uses a unique combination of colors and materials to create museum-worthy works of art. His work seems to have been inspired by Picasso and other collage artists.

Ruby Kobo is the name created by young designers Yuvi Alpert and Danna Kobo. Their bohemian style jewelry is making them famous and wealthy.

New Design Trends

Have you heard of eco-fashion? The green movement is slowly making its way into the high fashion clothing arena.

Eco-fashion artists create “sustainable” clothing designs. The designers choose the most environmentally friendly materials, dyes and styles. They have proven it is possible to do that without boring the catwalk audience.

Animal prints, leather, polka dots and very feminine ladylike designs are currently trending. Black tights combined with light colored shoes are also hot at the moment.

Of course clothing is only part of a complete look. You might need a pixie haircut, nerd glasses and a floppy hat to look like you have just stepped off the runway.
